Common causes of resorption include: inflammation, internal tooth whitening, trauma, pulp necrosis, periodontal treatment, idiopathic (unknown), and orthodontic treatment.
There are three main causes of orthodontic resorption:
- Trauma
- Increased osteoclast activity
- Orthodontic tooth movement with excessive force, over long distances, or tooth intrusion.
It is believed that after every orthodontic treatment, some degree of root apex resorption occurs, and this process cannot be predicted.
